Traveling on board a private crewed charter yacht, you have the luxury of a one-of-a-kind hotel that can take you anywhere. Even in the Mediterranean you can find enchanting secret hideaways. These are the ideal anchorages to enjoy with your closest family and friends while self-distancing from others. Here is the pick of some of our favourite less-visited places in the Med.
The Mediterranean is a perennial popular yachting destination. It is known for its clear azure waters, fascinating cultures and a rich and vibrant history. It has sophisticated ports and world-class nightlife. It is a food-lovers paradise. There are also incredible places that maintain a pristine wilderness. Here are some suggestions of remote islands with secluded anchorages that can provide a safe and happy holiday environment for you and your loved ones.
KORNATI ARCHIPELAGO, CROATIA
There are 140 islands that make up the Kornati Archipelago. Most of it is declared a National Park – and with its natural beauty, numerous coves and crystal clear blue waters, it’s easy to see why. There are no permanent residents on the islands and most of the area belongs to the people of Murter Island who come to tend the olive groves, the vineyards and orchards. The Park is often referred to as a "nautical paradise" in tourist publications; it is truly "slalom" sailing through the unforgettable islands, islets and reefs with crystal clear waters.
IRAKLEIA, CYCLADES, GREECE
One of most peaceful islands of the Cyclades, Irakleia offers a quiet place for complete relaxation. The tranquil streets and lack of tourists are a tonic for luxury charter yacht guests who call in. It is a tiny island with less than 100 residents most of which live in either Panagia (also known as Chora) and the island's port of Agios Georgios, but there are also secluded bays which provide thyme-scented solitude as their reward. For those who love diving, the island has a fascinating dive spot abundant in sealife.
LA MADDALENAS, SARDINIA, ITALY
One of Italy’s best-kept secrets is the Archipelago of La Maddalena. Unspoilt and charming, they provide excellent sailing and cruising. With over sixty islands, islets and rocks there are many different sand beaches edged by beautiful, clear shining seas of blue and turquiose. The scenery here is striking with unusually-shapped granite outcrops, weathered by wind and sea dotted with with fragrant scrubs and pine trees twisted and bent by the wind.
PORQUEROLLES, SOUTH OF FRANCE
Located off the town of Hyères, the Île de Porquerolles although diminutive in size (only 4 miles long and 2 miles wide) is a stunning, unspoilt paradise. So close and yet so different to the glitz and glamour of the chic coastal towns it is a relaxing blend of sandy white beaches and protected pine woods, maquis and eucalyptus. The entire island is a conservation national park and resembles the Cote d'Azur of a by-gone era. The quaint village remains small and untouched; no cars are allowed and the flora and fauna rich and colourful. It is a place of tranquility and beauty.
FORMENTERA, BALEARIC ISLANDS, SPAIN
Tiny Formentera has stunning beaches even better than its neighbours and what it may lack in cultural interest, it more than makes up for in rustic charm. Formentera is 10 miles long and 8 miles wide and considered the last wilderness in the Mediterranean. Known for its soft white sand and crystal clear water, it is no wonder the island has been frequented by the likes of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, when looking for quiet and anonymity, over the years.
FILICUDI, AEOLIAN ISLANDS, ITALY
Filicudi, located in the west of the Aeolian Archipelago, is less well known than the other islands, but no less enchanting. Its name seems to derive from the abundant ferns once present on the island. It has only one true settlement, Filicudi Port: the rest of the island has maintained, due to the massive emigration of the fifties, the unspoiled look of the absence of man. Even during the busiest periods of the year, this island boasts of its calm and tranquility. The most fascinating feature of Filicudi is its wild pristine nature with rocky terraces covered with brooms, and the large rocks and numerous caves, which liven up the coast.
PAXOS / ANTI-PAXOS, IONIAN, GREECE
Paxos (Paxi) is the second smallest inhabitated Ionian Island, only beaten by the little sister Anti-Paxos. Although inhabited Anti-Paxos has so few (approx 30) residents it hardly counts! Largely covered in vineyards there are also a number of lovely bays with the clear aquamarine water and the bright white sand that Greece is renowned for. Emerald Bay in particular is a favourite spot to swim. Paxos is a walker’s paradise and offers a variety of scenery, from ancient olive groves to pine-covered outcrops and breathtaking cliff tops.
