A luxury charter yacht gives you the opportunity to visit these beautiful islands where as well as being pampered in private you also have the chance to enjoy "limin'" it with the locals ... "limin'"… the Caribbean art of doing nothing while sharing food, drink, conversation and laughter. Here's a few of the hot spots that we recommend.
The Caribbean is known for many things from beautiful blonde beaches to breathtaking views but it is also known for the warm friendly people that live there who are happy to share their love of a party with you. Combine the groovy reggae beat with the Caribbean history of producing great rums and you have a mix that is heady and full of fun. Charter a luxury yacht in the Caribbean to visit these amazing islands and no doubt you will enjoy the privacy and pampering that this offers however if you do want a party ashore there are plenty on offer.
JOST VAN DYKE, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS
Jost Van Dyke may be a tiny four miles long but it is definitely a hot spot – one of the most happening places to go bar-hopping in the BVIs. There are two main areas to visit: Great Harbour with Foxy's, Ali Babas & Corsairs. While White Bay is home to the One Love Bar & Grill as well as the infamous Soggy Dollar Bar, the birthplace of the "Painkiller", the Caribbean's most celebrated cocktail consisting of dark rum, coconut cream, pineapple & orange juice topped with fresh nutmeg. For the more adventurous you can head over to Little Harbour for Harris' Place, Sydney's Peace & Love, and Abe's by the Sea.
And if you are looking for ultimate New Year's celebration then Foxy's Tamarind Bar is where it's at. Foxy (Philiciano) Callwood, owner of this ramshackle establishment, is the unofficial mayor of Jost Van Dyke and he really knows how to throw a party with well-known reggae bands on stage for the event.
Shoes are definitely optional here.
SAINT BARTHÉLEMY, OR ST. BARTHS
This is another tiny island in paradise but with a very different vibe. Here you definitely want your chicest designer clothing. St Barths is renowned for both its beautiful white beaches as well as its ability to attract the beautiful people. In the evening there are vast array of gourmet restaurants and exclusive bars to frequent, and with numerous luxurious private villas and superyachts in resident party-hopping with the famous and fashionable is always an option. It is no wonder this island is considered the Caribbean French Riviera – it's a great mix of tropical charm and European sophistication.
While St Barths is also good for New Year's Eve celebrations for an alternative party date there is also the St Barth Bucket Regatta in March when the yachting community converges on the island for party central. With glamourous open-air celebrations, live music and fireworks this is one party that you will remember.
Keep your eyes open here for old rock-stars and sexy young starlets.
ST MARTIN / ST MAARTEN
Half French and half Dutch rumour has it that this island was divided after a drinking competition in the 18th century. And not so much has changed – drinking is still one of the favourite occupations with reputedly more bars per capita here than anywhere else in the Caribbean. Whether you are wanting a quiet cocktail on the beach watching the sun go down or are looking for rum punch and dancing until dawn the possibilities are endless. Simpson Bay offers a plethora of pubs, clubs and bars and it is easy to while away a night pub crawling from one hot spot to another – indoor/outdoor venues with international DJs and great island and reggae beats adding to the mix. And for high octane fun a drink at the Sunset Bar & Grill at the end of the airport runway gives you a close encounter of an airplane kind as they land.
The island is also known as the Las Vegas of the Caribbean with 15 casinos on offer on the Dutch St Maarten side and, as long as the mistress of fortunes is smiling, you can have an exciting and enjoyable time whatever the hour.
Lady luck and a night of fun and frivolity ... no time for sleep or boredom.
At first glance you wouldn't imagine that tranquil Anguilla could be called a party island but dig a little deeper and there's a lot of fun to be had here. CNN, who rated the Dune Preserve the #1 beach bar in the world, can't be wrong. The funky Moonsplash Music Festival that happens here under a full moon is a reggae festival of note... John Mayer and Bob Dylan have both put in an appearance. And there's many other sensational sandy beach bars that serve up tasty BBQ ribs, chicken, fresh lobster and cool rum punches with island party beats heating up the atmosphere. Try out the tiny Garvey's Sunshine Shack on Rendezvous Beach or Elvis' Beach Bar on Sandy Ground. This spit of land between the sea and the salt pond is home to a very active night life. Actually it can be fairly wild at any time of the day. There's also some very fine dining establishments on the island if you are looking for something a little more mellow.
The best party to be had though is during the Anguilla Summer Festival also known as Carnival... even the post office shuts. Two weeks of fun events that culminates in "August Monday" celebrated with a 'round-the-island' boat race and a blow-out beach party to beat the best... soca music blares... everyone dances.
While this might be barefoot ... unfussy chic elegance is the key.
With so many options to choose from whatever your mood Antigua offers both variety and quality for the night time reveller. There are many exceptional bars showcasing both the beauty and history of this island. Choose Jacqui O's in Crabbe Hill overlooking Montserrat, definitely one of the "sexy" beach bars or wander into Pillars Bar located in the Admiral's Inn. These 18th Century buildings at Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbour house one of Antigua's more intimate, olde-worlde, elegant venues. Alternatively check out Abracadabra for a magical night of dancing or The Mad Mongoose for the young, restless and not the faint of heart. With such a range of night clubs and discotheques there is plenty to satisfy an ecelectic range of tastes from local reggae and soca through to house or hiphop; all the latest international hits or local live beats... the party goes on all night.
For the Caribbean's longest running regular party head to Shirley Heights Lookout on Sunday afternoon. For the last 25 years locals and visitors alike have gathered here for food, cocktails, great music and the most famous view on this beautiful island. But don't leave too early as the sunset is truly spectacular.
Anything goes in Antigua ... variety is the spice of life here.
If you are looking for fancy bright flashing lights and crowded clubs St Lucia is probably not the ideal destination. That's not to say the night life here can't be exciting. Local flavour is what makes the fun here. Fire eating shows, limbo competitions and home-grown karaoke nights offer an opportunity to party with the warm and welcoming locals, sharing cold beers, great music and of course awesome rum punches. Marigot Bay offers some great "off the beaten track" laid-back options while Rodney Bay offers the full range from casual chill-out venues to those that boast buzzing, dance-the-night-away decks. There's reggae beats, techno pulses and the latest of Euro/American sounds to enjoy.
But for a true taste of St Lucia you need to head to Gros Islet or Anse la Raye to join in a local "jump-up" on a Friday night. This is the authentic St Lucia ... streets are lined with tempting food vendors, and the local live music rocks the evening as the sun sets and goes right through until the sun rises again Saturday morning.
Funky but fashionable .... high class hippy works well.
